South Korean textbooks found with Taegeukgi and historical errors

Professor Seok Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University has identified errors regarding the South Korean national flag, the Taegeukgi, in middle school textbooks. Following a report from a parent, Seok confirmed that the Taegeukgi pattern was incorrectly drawn in a second-year middle school Korean language textbook published by Visang Education (2022 revision).

Additionally, the accompanying study guide contained a factual error by referring to the 2002 World Cup as the ‘2002 Korea World Cup’ instead of its official name, the ‘2002 Korea-Japan World Cup’.

Seok criticized both the publisher and the Ministry of Education, noting that since these are government-approved textbooks, the Ministry bears significant responsibility for the inaccuracies. He expressed a commitment to correcting improper uses of the national flag both domestically and abroad.
