South Korean tourism shifts as foreign travelers drive accommodation growth

Data from the Korea Tourism Organization reveals a significant shift in South Korea’s accommodation market, driven largely by a surge in foreign travelers. Over the past three years, while domestic overnight stays grew by 1.9%, foreign stays increased by 29.0%, a growth rate approximately 15 times higher than that of locals.

Regional hubs are emerging outside the capital. Significant increases in accommodation bookings were recorded in Pyeongchang (116.9%), Andong (106.4%), and Gijang-gun in Busan (78.5%). This expansion is attributed to improved transportation and the availability of leisure facilities like hotels and resorts.

Traveler preferences are shifting from indoor amenities to outdoor and experiential content. Bookings for golf-themed accommodations rose by 199.3%, hot spring themes by 98.9%, and water parks by 56.5%. Conversely, interest in indoor-focused facilities like spas and pool villas has declined.

Cultural and sporting events are also major drivers for overnight stays. K-pop performances saw foreign booking growth rates 6.1 times higher than locals, and professional baseball games significantly boosted demand near stadiums, particularly in non-metropolitan areas where the increase was 4.2 times higher than in the Seoul metropolitan area.
