South Korean Trade Minister negotiates U.S. investment projects

South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan is in Washington, D.C., to negotiate the first of several major strategic investment projects in the United States. During his visit, Kim met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and sought discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to address critical trade issues, including Section 301 investigations.

The negotiations come amid pressure from the United States regarding the pace of South Korean investments. Some reports suggest the U.S. may reconsider previous tariff agreements if investment timelines are not met. Additionally, South Korea faces potential tariffs related to forced labor investigations and concerns over overcapacity.

In a related administrative move, Park Jung-sung, currently serving as Trade Assistant Minister, is the leading candidate to be appointed as the new Deputy Minister for Trade Negotiations following the departure of Yeo Han-koo. The South Korean government has denied rumors that the U.S. is pressuring the country to prioritize memory semiconductor investments as its first major project.
