South Korea and US negotiate $200 billion investment plan details
South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan has traveled to the United States to resolve outstanding issues regarding a $200 billion investment plan. This initiative is part of a larger $350 billion commitment made by South Korea last year as part of a trade agreement that reduced U.S. tariffs on South Korean imports from 25 percent to 15 percent.
Of the total $350 billion, $150 billion is designated for cooperation in the shipbuilding sector. The remaining $200 billion is currently subject to ongoing negotiations regarding implementation details. Minister Kim noted that while the government aims to announce these projects by late August or early September, various specific issues have emerged at the working level during the final stages of negotiation.
The visit occurs amid continued trade discussions and pressure. The U.S. is expected to release the results of an investigation into alleged overproduction under Section 301 of the Trade Act by the end of the month. While there have been reports of U.S. pressure to accelerate investment to avoid tariff increases, Minister Kim stated he has not personally received such direct pressure, though he acknowledged the importance of maintaining the momentum of the investment.
