South Korean unions escalate disputes following failed wage negotiations

Labor tensions are rising in South Korea as multiple unions announce potential industrial actions following failed negotiations.

The Golfzon branch of the Korea Chemical, Fiber and Food Workers' Union has announced it will seek mediation through the Labor Relations Commission. After 20 rounds of collective and wage bargaining failed, the union accused the company of refusing to improve wages and welfare despite maintaining profitability. The union also raised concerns regarding alleged pressure on employees to resign through standby assignments.

Separately, the Busan Metro Labor Union has secured legal strike rights after mediation efforts with the Busan Transportation Corporation stalled. The union is demanding real wage increases, narrowing wage gaps, and the recruitment of essential safety personnel. If final negotiations scheduled for the 22nd fail, the union plans to launch a general strike on the 23rd. A recent strike authorization vote saw an 87.6% approval rate among participating members.
