South Korean universities face AI smart glass cheating

South Korean universities are facing a new wave of sophisticated cheating involving AI-powered smart glasses. Recent incidents at Yonsei University and the University of Seoul revealed students bypassing security by wearing standard prescription glasses during initial inspections, only to swap them for smart glasses once the exams began.

These devices, which feature miniature cameras and wireless communication modules, allow users to transmit exam questions to external collaborators or generative AI servers. Answers are then relayed back to the student via bone conduction speakers or tiny wireless earpieces. The technology is difficult to detect through visual inspection alone as the devices closely resemble ordinary eyewear.

Beyond university admissions, similar cheating attempts have been detected in national certification exams, including TOEIC and technical skill tests. In response, the Ministry of Education is working to develop standardized response manuals and visual training materials for proctors to better identify these high-tech devices ahead of the upcoming national college entrance exam.
