South Korean university application system failure triggers investigation
A system failure at the university application agency Uway Apply caused significant disruptions during the South Korean college admissions process. The error occurred on the 11th, just ten minutes before the application deadline, when a security system upgrade caused functional conflicts.
As a result, the Korean Council for University Education extended the deadline by one hour. The Ministry of Education has since received 1,588 requests for relief from students who were unable to complete their applications. Of these, 388 cases (approximately 27.7%) have been approved for relief so far, though many applicants were denied because they lacked digital logs of their attempted access during the outage.
Controversy has also arisen regarding fairness, as 17 universities released their competition rates at the original 6:00 PM deadline while applications were still being processed during the extension. The Ministry of Education has launched a special investigation team to examine the cause of the failure and the response protocols, with plans to consider transitioning to a public application system to prevent future occurrences.
