South Korean woman sentenced to one year in prison for stalking ex‑boyfriend

The Daejeon District Court sentenced a woman in her 30s to one year’s imprisonment for repeatedly stalking her former boyfriend. The judge, Hong Seong‑ji, found that the defendant had sent 284 messages via a KakaoTalk account, each accompanied by a 1‑won transfer, and had also left letters and delivered food to the victim’s residence between January and March.

The court ruled that the defendant violated the Stalking Punishment Act and ignored a temporary protection order that had been issued on March 30. After breaching the order by returning to the victim’s home the following day, police arrested her on the spot. The sentencing panel cited the significant mental distress caused to the victim and the victim’s request for a severe penalty as factors in the judgment.
