South Korean won strengthens amid trade surplus and economic growth

The South Korean won has shown strength against the U.S. dollar, with the exchange rate touching the 1,330 won level during recent trading. Analysts from Korea Investment & Securities suggest a continued trend of won appreciation, driven by a significant increase in the country's trade and current account surpluses. This influx of dollars from major exporters selling their holdings is a primary factor in the downward pressure on the exchange rate.

Economic growth expectations for South Korea are also improving, with forecasts for next year's growth rate reaching approximately 2.5%, outpacing U.S. projections. While a downward trend in the exchange rate is expected, experts note that the pace of decline may fluctuate.

In the domestic equity market, the KOSPI experienced volatility, turning lower after an initial gain due to inflation concerns linked to elevated oil prices. While major stocks like Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor saw declines, others such as SK hynix and Samsung SDI recorded gains.
