South Koreans support nuclear weapons possession, poll shows

A recent Gallup Korea poll reveals that 65% of South Korean citizens support the country possessing nuclear weapons, while 30% oppose the idea. The survey, conducted between August 25 and 27 among 1,001 adults, highlights growing domestic support for nuclear armament amid North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile capabilities.

Support for nuclear weapons spans political lines. While 78% of supporters of the conservative People Power Party favor possession, 60% of supporters of the liberal Democratic Party also expressed support. Among those without a political affiliation, 64% were in favor.

Regarding regional security, 70% of respondents believe the South Korean military holds an advantage over North Korea. Additionally, 39% of participants believe there is a possibility of North Korea initiating a war, with younger demographics—specifically those in their 20s and 30s—showing a higher awareness of this risk.
