South Korea's Democratic Party appoints committee chairs in parliament and selects Seoul council leadership

On June 30, the Democratic Party secured the election of 11 standing committee chairs in South Korea's 22nd National Assembly, moving the second‑half session toward regular operation. Party leader Han Byung‑do, serving as interim party head and floor leader, said the moves aim to create a functioning legislature and announced plans to amend rules on filibustering and fast‑track procedures. The opposition People Power Party boycotted the session, vowed to use all means to block the parliament's normalisation, and criticised the appointments.

Earlier, on June 29, the Democratic Party faction within the Seoul City Council held a second election meeting. Representatives elected Lee Sang‑hoon as the party's representative, Im Man‑gyun as council chair, Seong Heum‑je as vice‑chair, and Lee Byung‑do as operating chair. The new leaders pledged vigorous oversight of Mayor Oh Se‑hoon's administration and promised stronger, citizen‑focused governance in the capital district.
