Jeong Cheong-rae Faces Opposition in South Korea Democratic Party Leadership Race

Former Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae warned on social media that he is being outnumbered in the intra‑party contest, saying a "2‑to‑1 or 3‑to‑1" coalition of rivals would beat him and that he feels "a lot of pain." He identified the emerging anti‑Jeong bloc as consisting of former prime minister Kim Min‑seok, ex‑party chairman Song Young‑gil and lawmaker Go Min‑jeong, all of whom have announced bids for the upcoming party convention.

Jeong also rebutted accusations that he pursued "self‑politics" during his tenure, arguing that his appointments of secretaries and policy heads were merit‑based and not aimed at favoring personal allies. He said the media would have been silent if he had simply placed his own people in positions, and urged that the focus now be on President Lee Jae‑myung’s agenda rather than internal disputes.
