South Korea's Democratic Party weighs mega‑project reforms amid election uncertainty

Former prime minister Kim Min‑seok, now a candidate for the Democratic Party leadership, said the party cannot be confident of retaining a parliamentary majority in the upcoming general election. He cited recent polls showing the opposition ahead and warned that the government could be destabilised if the election does not go as expected.

At the same time, the Democratic Party inaugurated a special committee for its three "mega‑projects" – initiatives covering IT and venture growth, digital‑new deals, renewable energy and regional development. Party leader‑in‑acting Han Byung‑do and former regional governor Kim Kyung‑soo pledged to cut restrictive regulations and launch tailored legislation to accelerate the projects, describing them as a national decision to secure future industrial leadership.
