South Korea's Donghae City AI Data Center Project Secures GS Group Investment
The Gangwon provincial government, GS Group and Donghae city signed a public‑private partnership agreement to develop an AI data centre campus in Donghae's North‑Pyeong industrial zone. GS Group will invest between 30 trillion and 120 trillion won to build a 2.4 GW AI data centre, the largest of its kind in Asia, with the first 1.2 GW phase slated for completion by 2028 and a second phase by 2029. The construction is projected to create about 70,000 jobs, while around 2,000 positions will remain after the centre becomes operational.
Donghae’s newly elected mayor outlined broader city goals, including positioning Donghae as a global marine city, securing a 30‑minute emergency‑medical response, and fostering tourism, education and safety initiatives. The mayor highlighted that the AI data‑centre investment will drive regional economic growth, generate high‑tech employment and help transform the local industrial landscape.
