Chung Mong-gyu Resigns as Korea Football Association President

Chung Mong-gyu stepped down as president of the Korea Football Association (KFA) after more than 13 years in the role. He submitted his resignation letter on 6 April at a meeting held in Cheonan’s Korea Football Park, citing personal responsibility for the national team’s early exit from the FIFA World Cup. In his statement Chung said, "All the success is thanks to our players and fans, and all the mistakes are my responsibility," and added that he would remain a passionate fan of Korean football.

The resignation follows criticism of the KFA’s handling of the coach‑hiring process and a ministry‑led audit that highlighted irregularities within the federation. Under KFA rules, one of the four vice‑presidents will serve as interim president, and a new president must be elected within 60 days, with discussions under way about moving from an indirect to a direct election system.

The event is part of a wider Asian football shake‑up, with Yasser Al‑Misehal also resigning as Saudi Arabia Football Federation president after his team’s World Cup disappointment.
