South Korea's joint investigation unit criticised over Shincheonji‑Democratic Party probe

Lawmaker Choi Min‑hee of the Democratic Party urged the joint investigation unit (합수본) to publish the results of its probe into alleged Shincheonji ties with the party, warning that the lack of transparency could amount to interference in local elections and the party leadership race.

The joint investigation unit said it had secured statements from Shincheonji leaders urging members to join the Democratic Party, but maintained that no organized coercion to force membership was found, contrasting it with the People Power Party where the unit reported that membership quotas were assigned and coordinated.

The unit indicated it would concentrate investigative resources on the Democratic Party membership allegations ahead of the June 3 local elections and before the party’s national convention, though it has not yet launched forced raids. It also noted that some former Shincheonji members had joined both major parties, prompting election‑law violation inquiries.
