South Korean semiconductor stocks surge on AI demand optimism

South Korean markets and semiconductor stocks experienced a significant rally driven by optimism surrounding artificial intelligence. The release of OpenAI’s new AI model, ‘Astra,’ fueled expectations for increased demand for high-capacity memory products, benefiting major chipmakers like SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. SK Hynix shares saw substantial gains, rising over 8%, while Samsung Electronics also recorded strong increases.

This surge in the tech sector contributed to a sharp rise in the KOSPI, which approached the 7,000-point mark. Foreign investors returned to the South Korean market with massive net purchases, particularly targeting semiconductor leaders. Goldman Sachs has expressed a bullish outlook for the region, raising its KOSPI target from 9,000 to 12,000, citing the sustained demand for AI hardware.

On the macroeconomic front, South Korea’s cumulative exports from January to August have already surpassed the total recorded for the entire previous year, reaching $709.4 billion. Semiconductor exports specifically have seen explosive growth, with August figures showing a 209% year-on-year increase. Additionally, South Korean exports to India rose by 30.8% during the same period, driven by India's growing demand for AI and data center infrastructure. However, rising global oil prices and potential interest rate fluctuations in the US remain key variables for the economy.
