South Korea's National Education Committee unveils long‑term education reform plan

The National Education Committee (NEC) of South Korea announced that it will release a draft of the 2028‑2037 National Education Development Plan in October, followed by a public consultation before a final version is approved in March. The plan emphasizes AI‑driven curriculum innovation, a mid‑term overhaul of university admissions, and measures to restore school communities, including expanding modern history content in middle‑school curricula and adding elective subjects in high schools.

In parallel, the NEC convened a special Learning Rights Committee on July 7, chaired by Lee Kwang‑ho and comprising 16 experts from education, law, philosophy, economics and management. The committee will work for six months to propose policies that guarantee the right to learning throughout a citizen’s life, addressing gaps in education access and proposing lifelong‑learning support mechanisms.
