South Korea's National Tax Service to centralize revenue collection
The National Tax Service (NTS) of South Korea announced plans to centralize the collection of non-tax revenues and strengthen measures against tax evasion during a National Assembly audit. Commissioner Lim Kwang-hyun stated that the agency will move to integrate the collection of non-tax revenues, which are currently scattered across 64 government departments and 4,500 agencies, into a single unified system. To support this, the NTS is seeking the enactment of a new law within the year.
To address an estimated 16.2 trillion won in non-tax revenue arrears, the NTS will deploy a task force of approximately 10,000 personnel, including 9,500 temporary workers, to verify the status of accumulated arrears totaling 130 trillion won. The agency also plans to establish a special task force to track intelligent offshore tax evasion and high-value tax delinquencies, such as those involving real estate or luxury assets.
Additionally, the NTS intends to gradually introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into administrative processes to improve efficiency and taxpayer services. Regarding revenue performance, the agency reported that cumulative tax revenue through August reached 323.8 trillion won, an increase of 68.6 trillion won compared to the previous year.
