South Korea's Night Markets Boost Summer Tourism

The Small Business Market Promotion Agency (SBA) is coordinating a nationwide "Byeolbyeol Night Market" brand, extending operating hours of traditional markets into the evening to attract tourists and increase sales. The agency reported that the Incheon Dong‑gu Modern Market attracted about 6,000 visitors and generated roughly 120 million KRW in sales during a recent night‑market event, while the Andong Yong‑sang Public Market saw 8,560 visitors and a 10 % rise in sales, amounting to about 42.8 million KRW.

The program is being rolled out sequentially from August 12 to October 11 in markets across Gangwon (Jeongseon), Gyeongbuk (Yeongju), Gyeonggi (Anseong) and Chungnam (Seosan), each pairing local food, performances and cultural activities. In parallel, local governments in coastal cities such as Gangneung, Donghae, Ulsan, Pohang and Yeongyang are running their own summer night‑market festivals with food stalls, flea‑market booths, live music and family‑friendly attractions, aiming to draw vacationers and revitalize regional commerce.
