South Korea's President Lee and policy chief discuss new growth outlook and real estate reforms

Policy chief Kim Yong‑beom told reporters that South Korea has entered a growth trajectory “never seen before,” noting that the economy’s trend line shifted in the second half of 2025 and that forecasts now place the country among the fastest‑growing advanced economies in 2026‑27. He highlighted three megaprojects – semiconductors, AI data centres and physical‑AI – as drivers of a new industrial‑capital market growth engine, while acknowledging challenges such as the won’s status and AI‑semiconductor dependence.

President Lee Jae‑myung announced a nationwide public debate on 23 May to set the direction for housing supply, finance and taxation. He said the discussion will involve citizens and experts to craft solutions to rising apartment prices, jeonse and monthly rents. Ahead of the debate, the ministries of Land, Transport and Finance, the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Economy and Finance will each hold separate forums on supply, finance and tax issues. Lee also posted on X that pre‑publishing key points on property holding tax and transaction tax will aid the public dialogue.
