South Korea's semiconductor boom fuels worker stock gains and Seoul housing pressure

A survey of 700 office workers in Seoul and the capital region found that 75% of respondents are currently earning profits from stock investments, with only 12.6% reporting losses. The AI and semiconductor sector dominates portfolios, accounting for 49.6% of holdings, followed by index‑tracking ETFs and U.S. big‑tech growth stocks. Nearly all participants (97%) intend to keep investing, citing the need for alternatives to low‑interest savings accounts and additional income streams.

At the same time, senior policy official Kim Yong‑beom warned that the semiconductor surge is creating gentrification pressures in Seoul as large inflows of liquidity raise real‑estate prices. He called for programs to recycle the massive tax revenue generated by semiconductor profits back to the public, and highlighted upcoming mega‑project investment plans in semiconductors, physical AI, and robotics.
