The City of South Lake Tahoe has launched a Long‑Term Rental Incentive Program that pays owners of second homes $4,500 for a 12‑month lease or $2,000 for a six‑month lease to increase affordable housing for local workers. Eligible units must be legally permitted, meet health‑and‑safety standards, and rent is capped at $3,500 for one‑bedroom or larger units. At the same time, tourists are being targeted by fraudulent Craigslist listings that use real photos of homes in South Lake Tahoe and demand advance payment by check, Western Union, money orders or gift cards. Victims often lose $800 or more, and the Federal Trade Commission recorded 14,263 vacation‑travel fraud reports nationwide from July to September 2025, with losses estimated at $40 million; California accounted for about $6.3 million in the same period. Local police say the scams are relentless, though the South Lake Tahoe Police Department reported no vacation‑home rental scams in 2026 so far.
The city’s incentive program and a new vacation‑home rental ordinance effective April 23 2026, which requires permits for short‑term rentals, are intended to address the housing crunch while curbing fraud by encouraging legitimate, longer‑term rentals.
