South Los Angeles mother arrested in infant's death

A 19-year-old woman, identified as Takiyah Babers, has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a four-month-old baby girl's body in a South Los Angeles dumpster.

The infant, identified by foster grandparents as Luna, was found unresponsive in a trash receptacle near the 5200 block of Alba Street around 10:30 p.m. on Monday. Responding firefighters transported the child to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities estimate the infant was between four and six months old and had been placed in the dumpster within 24 hours of being found.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the death as a homicide. Investigators have ruled out gang involvement and noted the child was not homeless. Babers is currently being held on $2 million bail. The child's foster grandparents, Herman Johnson and Laura Lacy, confirmed the infant's identity, noting she possessed a distinct physical trait of having six toes on her left foot.
