South Melbourne FC wins historic Australia Cup title

South Melbourne FC made history by becoming the first National Premier Leagues (NPL) team to win the Australia Cup. The club, which has deep roots in the Greek-Australian community, defeated A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory in a penalty shootout (4-3) following a 1-1 draw at AAMI Park.

The match was played before a record-breaking crowd of 29,911 spectators. After a scoreless regular time, Melbourne Victory took the lead in the 95th minute through Denis Genreau, but South Melbourne's Max Mikkola equalized late in extra time to force the shootout.

Spanish goalkeeper Javi Díaz was instrumental in the victory, earning the Mark Viduka MVP award after making decisive saves during the shootout. The win marks a significant milestone for the 65-year-old club, which had previously faced financial instability and exclusion from the top-tier A-League.
