South Rupununi Conservation Society leads wildlife movement in Guyana

The documentation of the endangered red siskin has inspired a grassroots conservation movement across 16 villages in Guyana’s South Rupununi region. This effort led to the formation of the South Rupununi Conservation Society (SRCS), an organization that utilizes a multi-community approach grounded in traditional Indigenous knowledge.

Involving Indigenous villagers, farmers, and teachers, the SRCS focuses on wildlife research, the development of conservation guidelines, and local ecology education. Key initiatives include the establishment of community conservation zones to protect species such as the giant anteater and the genetic documentation of local wildlife.

Local knowledge has significantly aided scientific research; for example, Indigenous observations of giant anteaters marking trees led to the use of camera traps, which recorded hundreds of visits and provided new insights into animal communication. Despite the success of this collaborative network, the model faces challenges from development pressures, short-term funding, and cultural shifts.
