South Sudan cattle raids leave at least 60 dead in Warrap State
At least 60 people were killed and approximately 50 others wounded during violent cattle raiding attacks in Warrap State, South Sudan. According to Warrap State Information Minister Wol Mayom, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. on August 9 at the Ariec cattle camp in Akop Payam, Tonj North County.
Specific casualty figures provided by Minister Mayom include 37 deaths from the Pan Ariik community and 11 deaths from the Apuk-Padoc community. The minister also reported that 15 attackers were killed during the confrontation. Of the 50 wounded, 17 were seriously injured and evacuated to Wau Civil Hospital.
Security forces were deployed to the area following the attack, which was initially delayed by poor road conditions caused by the rainy season. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, focusing on the Alabek area where suspects are believed to be hiding. The state government has expressed intentions to conduct a comprehensive disarmament campaign across Warrap, Unity, and Western Bahr el Ghazal states to mitigate recurring communal violence.
Cattle theft and associated violence have long plagued South Sudan, a nation struggling with poverty and instability. Anita Kiki Gbeho, head of the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has previously warned the UN Security Council that civilians continue to pay the highest price due to the unstable situation.
