South Sudan clashes leave scores dead in Lakes state

Armed clashes between rival communities in the Rumbek area of Lakes state, South Sudan, have resulted in dozens of deaths and numerous injuries. The South Sudan Information Ministry reported that approximately 70 people were killed, including four soldiers, though the final death toll is still being verified.

The violence involved armed youths from the Pakam community in Rumbek North County and the Nyang community in Rumbek Central County, both of which are part of the Dinka ethnic group. The fighting occurred on a Friday, prompting government soldiers and United Nations peacekeepers to attempt to restore order.

Rumbek State Hospital reported being overwhelmed by more than 50 wounded patients, many suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest. Local officials noted that while disputes over cattle, grazing land, and revenge killings frequently fuel violence in the region, the specific immediate cause of this latest outbreak remains unclear.
