South Sudan faces imminent famine as food aid supplies dwindle

South Sudan faces a critical humanitarian crisis as food supplies are projected to run out entirely by September. The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNHCR have issued urgent warnings that without immediate funding, the country's most vulnerable populations will lose all support.

Currently, aid is being restricted to only the most vulnerable families, and even then, they are receiving only half rations. The crisis is driven by ongoing internal power struggles, reduced international funding, and an influx of refugees fleeing conflict in neighboring countries. Approximately 2.2 million children in the country are already suffering from acute malnutrition.

Humanitarian workers warn that the lack of food assistance will lead to severe social consequences, including increased rates of child marriage, child labor, and the recruitment of children into armed groups.
