South Sudan floods displace 100,000 people

Severe flooding in South Sudan during 2025 has displaced approximately 100,000 people, according to warnings from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The most heavily impacted areas include Jonglei, Upper Nile, and Unity states.

The rising water levels, driven by heavy rains and the White Nile, have exacerbated an existing humanitarian crisis characterized by conflict, hunger, and disease. The floods have destroyed crops, pastures, and livestock, significantly worsening food insecurity for vulnerable communities. Many of those displaced had already been forced from their homes by previous violence.

UNHCR officials warned that if the flooding continues, the number of displaced persons could reach as many as 400,000 by the end of 2025, potentially surpassing the displacement levels recorded during the 2024 floods.
