South Sudan presidency defends liberation history amid political debate

The Office of the President of South Sudan has issued a statement rejecting attempts to rewrite the nation’s liberation history. The presidency affirmed that President Salva Kiir was a senior leader in the struggle alongside the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, emphasizing that the movement was a collective effort rather than the achievement of a few individuals.

The statement cautioned against using the sacrifices of liberation veterans as political leverage and urged citizens to support a peaceful democratic process. It also questioned the motives of political actors who have expressed hesitation regarding democratic transitions.

In response to the government's emphasis on sovereignty and national ownership, critics argue that the administration may be conflating government control with the will of the people. The South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA), including the National Salvation Front (NAS), maintains that a genuinely inclusive political process must address the root causes of conflict before credible elections can be held.
