South Sudan President Salva Kiir dissolves transitional government

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has dissolved the transitional government and appointed a new group of caretaker officials to oversee the country’s upcoming elections. The move follows recent legislative changes to the National Electoral Law, which now allow elections to proceed without a permanent constitution or a completed national census.

In addition to appointing 13 caretaker ministers and 10 state governors, Kiir has designated new leadership for several key institutions, including the National Communication Authority and the South Sudan Revenue Authority. The new appointments include Cecilia Adut Manyok as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ayor Akuoch Anok as Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs.

The legislative shifts have drawn criticism from political analysts and legal experts. Critics argue that removing the requirements for a constitution and census could centralize power within the presidency and potentially allow the transition period to be extended indefinitely. The first national elections in the country's history are currently scheduled for December 22.
