South Sudan President Salva Kiir opens inter-party dialogue
President Salva Kiir Mayardit officially opened an inter-party dialogue in Juba on Thursday to address political issues ahead of the country’s upcoming elections. The dialogue follows the recent dissolution of the transitional government and the establishment of an interim executive tasked with preparing for elections scheduled for December 22.
Several opposition leaders participating in the talks have raised concerns regarding election security, political participation, and government funding. Dr. Issa Muzammil Sabit Makilele of the National Patriotic Movement emphasized the need for security protection for candidates, while Paulino Lukudu Obede of the United South Sudan Party called for clarity on whether the elections will be general or partial. Other leaders, such as Moro Isaac Genesio, stressed the importance of a free political environment and effective dispute resolution mechanisms.
However, the dialogue faces challenges as some opposition groups have refused to participate. These groups cite a constitutional and legitimacy crisis stemming from the manner in which the transitional government was dissolved. They have called for international intervention to ensure credible elections and prevent further escalation of tensions in the country.
