South Sudan Schedules First Democratic Election for Dec 2026 Amid Preparation Challenges

South Sudan will hold its first national election on 22 December 2026, marking the country’s inaugural vote since the 2018 revitalised peace agreement. The poll has already been postponed twice, in 2022 and 2024, and critics warn that institutional weakness, ongoing insecurity and unfinished reforms – such as a permanent constitution and an integrated national army – jeopardise a credible process.

President Salva Kiir has confirmed his candidacy for the election, while detained Vice‑President Riek Machar remains on trial for alleged armed fighting. The election law is disputed for errors, such as allocating 105 % of parliamentary seats, and voter registration has not begun. Kiir also pledged to reduce the oversized government that currently includes five vice‑presidents and 650 legislators.

Analysts argue that, rather than risking another transition extension, South Sudan needs a clear succession plan, potentially by naming a running mate for Kiir, to avoid instability if the transition drags on.
