South Sudanese states appoint caretaker local officials

South Sudanese states are establishing caretaker local government structures in preparation for planned elections in December 2026.

In Central Equatoria State, Governor Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani has appointed caretaker commissioners for the six counties, including Juba, Yei River, Kajo-Keji, Terekeka, Lainya, and Morobo. Additionally, Christopher Serafino Wani Swaka has been named caretaker mayor of Juba City Council, supported by three deputy mayors overseeing administration, environment, and social services.

In Eastern Equatoria State, newly appointed caretaker county commissioners, municipal mayors, and local government administrators have been sworn into office in Torit. Caretaker Governor Louis Lobong Lojore instructed the officials to maintain peace, ensure security for political parties, and prepare their respective areas for the upcoming democratic elections. Officials have pledged to work with the National Elections Commission and local communities to ensure transparency and accountability during the transition.
