South Sulawesi wind energy potential requires academic study

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has called for in-depth academic studies to assess the wind energy potential in South Sulawesi. Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of EBTKE at the ministry, emphasized that because wind characteristics vary by region, specific data-driven research is essential to maximize the use of New and Renewable Energy (EBTKE).

Utilizing wind energy in South Sulawesi could provide critical support to the local electricity grid, particularly during the dry season when hydropower production typically declines. Currently, Indonesia's installed wind power capacity stands at 75 megawatts, with projections suggesting a potential to reach 1 gigawatt over the next decade.

Hasanuddin University (Unhas) has been identified as a key partner in this effort. Vice Rector Amir Ilyas noted that South Sulawesi serves as a strategic green energy hub for Eastern Indonesia, boasting prime wind corridors in Jeneponto and Sidrap, high solar intensity, and significant hydropower potential. The university is focusing its research on technological innovations such as floating solar power plants, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and biomass utilization to support the national energy transition.
