South Sumatra forest fires cause haze and flight delays

Forest and land fires in South Sumatra have led to increased haze, prompting mitigation efforts at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang. Airport management is closely monitoring visibility, as low visibility has already caused flight delays for Garuda Indonesia and Citilink in late August. The airport is also serving as an alternative hub for other regions affected by haze.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni reported that while haze remains a threat to the public, the number of hotspots and fire spots in South Sumatra is statistically decreasing. Despite this downward trend, officials warn that peatland fires can continue to produce smoke even without visible flames. Authorities are coordinating with stakeholders to monitor air quality and weather in real time, while urging farmers and companies to avoid land clearing through burning methods.
