Matteo Salvini proposes lowering Italy's retirement age to 64

Matteo Salvini, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has announced a proposal to reform Italy's pension system by lowering the retirement age from 67 to 64. This initiative, led by the Lega party, aims to supersede the existing Fornero law and is intended to apply to the 2027 budget year and beyond.

The proposal suggests that workers who choose early retirement would have their pensions recalculated using the contributory method. Salvini stated that funding has been identified and that the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the National Social Security Institute (INPS) are currently conducting cost estimates to ensure full coverage.

In addition to pension reforms, the budget maneuver discussed by the Lega includes raising the threshold for simplified flat-rate taxation for VAT holders to 100,000 euros at a 15% rate, and increasing investments for security and law enforcement recruitment.
