South Tyrol autonomy marks 80 years of political evolution

As the 80th anniversary of the Gruber-Degasperi Agreement approaches on September 5, political figures and experts are reflecting on the history and current state of autonomy in South Tyrol.

Political leader Roland Stauder described the Paris Treaty as the ‘Magna Charta of South Tyrol,’ noting that it provided essential international legal protections for German and Ladin minorities, including rights to mother-tongue instruction and bilingualism. Stauder warned against state centralization and political theories that he claims aim to dilute the principles of autonomy.

Political scientist Günther Pallaver characterized the autonomy as a ‘success story’ built on a culture of negotiation and mutual concessions between South Tyrol, Italy, and Austria. However, Pallaver warned of a growing ‘re-ethnicization’ within the region. He specifically cited concerns regarding electoral district reforms that could weaken the existing practice of cross-ethnic voting support, potentially reinforcing ethnic-political divisions.
