South Tyrol Endures Record July Heatwave with Little Rain

The South Tyrol region experienced an unusually hot July 2026, with average temperatures about 2 °C above the long‑term mean. Meteorologist Dieter Peterlin of the regional meteorology and avalanche warning office reported that the month saw its fourth and strongest heatwave, persisting into August. The highest temperature recorded was 38.9 °C on 30 July in Bozen, while the lowest was 2.6 °C on 24 July in Sexten.

Rainfall was markedly below normal; the Etschtal received roughly half the usual amount and the rest of the region only about 30 % of typical precipitation. The network of 95 automatic weather stations—58 in settlements and 37 on mountains—continues to provide real‑time data via the online portal Wetter Südtirol. Peterlin forecasts that temperatures will ease slightly over the weekend but remain around 35 °C, with no immediate end to the heatwave in sight.
