South Tyrol farms integrate agritourism and rural traditions

In South Tyrol, the traditional 'maso'—a family farm where residence, land, and production are integrated—is evolving through agritourism. The Gallo Rosso brand, managed by the South Tyrolean Farmers and Direct Growers Union, has supported this diversification since 1998 by providing complementary income streams to traditional farming and livestock production.

The system currently encompasses roughly 1,600 farm stays and over 120 farms dedicated to food production, traditional catering, and craftsmanship. To maintain quality, Gallo Rosso utilizes a flower-based classification system ranging from two to five flowers.

Beyond hospitality, these farms focus on preserving rural knowledge. Activities include cooking classes, workshops on bread making, yogurt preparation, and traditional recipes like 'Schuttelbrot' and 'Paarl' breads. A dedicated cooking school was also established in 2023 to help transmit these historical culinary practices and their connection to seasonal availability.
