South Tyrol flooding causes severe damage in Gsies and Passeier valleys
Severe thunderstorms and extreme rainfall caused widespread flooding in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy, particularly impacting the Gsies and Passeier valleys. The intense weather, which included hail, led to streams overflowing their banks, carrying large amounts of debris, rocks, and mud into surrounding areas.
Emergency services reported significant damage to infrastructure, including flooded roads, fields, and bridges. Water entered numerous buildings, with basements and underground garages reaching depths of up to 15 centimeters in some locations. The storms also triggered mudslides and caused power outages across the affected areas.
In St. Martin in Passeier, rainfall was exceptionally high, reaching approximately 53 liters per square meter within just 30 minutes. In other parts of the region, meteorologists recorded totals of up to 60 liters per square meter. Despite the extensive property damage and the scale of the emergency response involving pumps and excavators, no injuries have been reported.
