South Tyrol launches free contraceptive pilot for youth
South Tyrol has launched a one-year pilot project to provide free contraceptives to young people aged 14 to 25 residing in the province of Bolzano. The initiative, approved by the provincial government in June, aims to support sexual autonomy and prevent unintended pregnancies following rising abortion rates.
The program includes the provision of the contraceptive pill, vaginal rings, transdermal patches, subcutaneous implants, and IUDs. Condoms are to be distributed through participating private family counseling centers. Additionally, citizens identified as vulnerable due to certain medical conditions are eligible to request these supplies.
Hubert Messner, the Provincial Councilor for Health Prevention, stated that improving information and access to contraceptives is intended to help young people make informed decisions and reduce health risks. Data from the provincial statistics office (Astat) noted that 595 voluntary abortions were recorded in South Tyrol in 2025.
