South Tyrol officials address extreme overtourism in Villnöß Valley

Authorities in South Tyrol are taking steps to address uncontrolled tourism levels in popular mountain regions, specifically highlighting the Villnöß Valley. Luis Walcher, the Provincial Councilor for Tourism in Bozen, has convened a meeting to establish an initiative group aimed at gathering expertise and implementing concrete measures to manage tourist hotspots.

In areas such as Santa Maddalena and near the Geisler peaks, high volumes of day-trippers seeking social media photography have caused significant disruptions. The influx has led to overcrowded public buses, illegal camper van camping, and increased pressure on agricultural land, nature, and the local landscape.

Local residents have reported difficulties with daily life, noting that peak periods become unmanageable. Roswitha Moret, a representative for Santa Maddalena, noted that during certain phases, the situation became so intense that locals were unable to board public buses to return home.
