South Tyrol reports regional successes and health warnings

In South Tyrol, the political group Die Freiheitlichen congratulated the regional team for their success at WorldSkills 2026 in Shanghai, where participants earned one gold medal, one bronze medal, and eight Medallions for Excellence. Dietmar Zwerger, General Secretary of Die Freiheitlichen, used the occasion to call for reduced bureaucracy and lower tax rates, specifically the IRAP rate, to support small businesses and apprenticeships.

Health awareness is also a focus in the region. On World Heart Day, South Tyrol's health department highlighted that cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the area, accounting for 30.3 percent of all fatalities according to the 2024 health report. Officials emphasized the importance of prevention through diet, exercise, and avoiding tobacco.

In other regional developments, South Tyrol is preparing a series of events in October to showcase its UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, including alpinism and traditional irrigation. Meanwhile, political tension persists regarding helicopter tourism, as the Team K party criticizes the provincial government for failing to implement environmental restrictions despite gaining new legislative competencies following the 2026 autonomy reform.
