South Tyrol study finds 17% of young adults are physically inactive
A study conducted by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, titled LOOK4SPORT, reveals that 17% of young adults aged 18 to 34 in South Tyrol are physically inactive. While over 80% of respondents meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation of at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week—placing the region among the most active in Italy—nearly one in six fails to reach these minimum levels.
Research led by Professor Attilio Carraro identified that inactivity is most prevalent among individuals over the age of 27 and those living in municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants. The study analyzed physical activity, sedentary behavior, and psychological well-being to understand the barriers to an active lifestyle.
Professor Carraro noted that this age group undergoes significant life transitions, including entering the workforce and seeking independence. He warned that inactivity during this period often persists into later decades, potentially leading to long-term health consequences and increased costs for the healthcare system.
