South Tyrol's Roter Hahn Agrotourism Showcases Authentic Alpine Farms

The South Tyrolean initiative Roter Hahn, launched by the South Tyrol Farmers' Association, certifies family farms that maintain real agricultural activity and open their homes to guests. Visitors staying at Ansitz Lidl in the village of Prissiano experience daily farm life on the Lidl family’s orchard, modest vineyard and chicken coop, with meals featuring fresh eggs, homemade preserves, local cheeses and regional breads. The programme aims to preserve traditional agrarian customs, promote genuine agrotourism and support small-scale producers in the Alpine region, which is noted for its mild climate that allows palms and citrus trees to grow alongside apple orchards and vineyards.

The farm’s hosts, Günther and Stephanie Lidl, welcome travelers to partake in authentic rural routines, contrasting with conventional tourist accommodations that merely mimic a countryside aesthetic. Roter Hahn’s standards require that participating establishments actively cultivate crops or raise livestock, ensuring guests observe authentic agricultural work rather than a staged experience.
