South Yorkshire patients struggle with AI medical receptionist

Patients in South Yorkshire are reportedly struggling to access medical services due to difficulties with an AI receptionist named ‘Emma’. The AI system, implemented in several clinics to manage telephone calls and appointments, has struggled to accurately understand local Yorkshire accents.

Healthwatch Rotherham has reported that these technical limitations are creating significant barriers to healthcare. Kym Gleeson, manager of Healthwatch Rotherham, noted that the considerable variations in regional accents make the digital assistant ineffective for many users.

The frustration caused by the system has led some patients to abandon their attempts to book appointments entirely. Instead of reducing wait times, the technology has inadvertently created a new obstacle, with some individuals even choosing to travel to clinics in person to bypass the automated phone system.
