SoutH2 Corridor: Five nations sign agreement to transport green hydrogen to Europe

Energy ministers from Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany have signed the ‘Algiers Declaration’ to advance the SoutH2 Corridor project. This initiative aims to transport up to 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year from Algeria to Europe via Tunisia and the Mediterranean.

The project is expected to meet approximately 10% of Europe’s projected green hydrogen demand by 2040. The proposed 3,000-kilometer route intends to utilize and modernize existing natural gas infrastructure to reduce construction costs and timelines.

Key outcomes of the declaration include the establishment of a dedicated secretariat to provide technical support, with guidance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The agreement seeks to transition the project from political commitment to concrete technical and regulatory implementation, fostering energy integration between North Africa and Europe.
