Southeast Asia AI Surge Highlights Digital Gaps, Infrastructure Spending

A Lark‑commissioned study of 900 employers and more than 5,000 employees across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam found that only 15 % of organisations consider themselves digitally mature. While 90 % of employers say they are building AI‑ready cultures, employees report fragmented tools, unclear autonomy and a lack of transparency, with 55 % losing three or more hours per week to collaboration inefficiencies.

At the same time, massive infrastructure investments are reshaping the region’s AI landscape. In 2024 Microsoft pledged US$2.2 billion to Malaysia and US$1.7 billion to Indonesia; Google announced US$2 billion for a Malaysian data centre and US$1 billion for Thailand; Amazon Web Services launched a Bangkok cloud region backed by over US$5 billion; and NVIDIA together with Malaysia’s YTL Power is building a US$4.3 billion AI supercomputer campus in Johor. Analysts argue that with a population of 677 million and a combined GDP of around US$4.1 trillion, ASEAN is emerging as the world’s third AI pole, positioned to host the compute infrastructure that will power the next wave of consumer AI services.
